The xenophobic attacks bring to the fore a strong criminal element who remain latently hidden in the community until they are mobilised into action by leaders who are uninhibited by the way they express their prejudices.
We’ve seen on many occasions infuriated protesters behave unruly at Political rally gatherings and in turn, political parties distancing themselves from the dissident factions who bring their party into disrepute by destruction of property, looting of shops and general violent behaviour to any political opposition they may encounter. It all starts with the utterances of intolerant political rhetoric. Our leaders need to think deeply before committing themselves to their shallow words.
There is a strong criminal element camouflaged as xenophobia whose only purpose is to satiate it’s merciless, selfish and violent intent and in doing so, prey on the fear and ignorance of the socially debilitated communities they feed off.
This is not to say that the rest of the community are absolved from any wrong doing, they too are complicit for condoning the perpetrated heinous crimes that they are full witness too, they may think that they do not have blood on their hands but they are as responsible as the political leaders who call them to arms and those leaders who do nothing while people die both local and foreign.
We can only reign these situations in by becoming active citizens, build unity in your neighbourhood, join your local CPF, participate in community events, get to know your local councillor, support your local businesses. When you nurture your community this way to grow, you are isolating the criminal elements and giving the scourge of crime very little room to breath and grow but when you hide yourselves from your community you end up nurturing crime.
BECOME THE HEART OF YOUR COMMUNITY, SPEAK YOUR MIND TO PEOPLE AROUND YOU, SAY NO TO XENOPHOBIA BECAUSE BAD THINGS WILL HAPPEN WHEN GOOD PEOPLE REMAIN SILENT.
